WRIGHT COMES BACK TO WIN EURO TOUR TITLE

Peter Wright reeled off six legs in a row to stun Luke Littler 8-5 in the final of the German Darts Championship on Sunday.

An inspired ‘Snakebite’ fought back from 3-0 and 5-2 behind to defeat the Premier League champion in a remarkable finale at Halle 39, in Hildesheim.

Teenager Littler averaged 106.87 and threw 10 180s but he was denied a third European Tour title of the season by the 54-year-old Wright, who took out 110 and 146 finishes on his way to victory.

“I just kept believing in myself,” Wright said. “Luke is a fantastic dart player and he was blowing me off the board with 180s, but I thought if I could keep with him, I might get back into it.

“This means a lot to me. Luke is distraught because he wants to win. He’s a fighter, he’s a winner, and he’ll be back and beating us all again soon.”

Wright’s run to a ninth career European Tour title started with wins against Niko Springer and Stephen Bunting, before he started his campaign on Sunday with a 6-4 triumph over Gian van Veen.

The Scot’s best performance came in the quarter-finals with a 108.90 average helping him fight back from 4-2 down to knock out old rival Michael van Gerwen 6-4.

Wright then got the better of top seed Dave Chisnall 7-5 to reach his first final of the season, where he produced a six-leg burst to beat Littler and pick up his maiden title of 2024, continuing his streak of winning at least one PDC title a year dating back to 2012.

The European Tour continues with the Flanders Darts Trophy in Belgium this weekend (September 6-8).

DUTCH DELIGHT AT THE SUPER SERIES

Marvin van Velzen became the first Dutch winner of Champions Week at the MODUS Super Series on Saturday night.

The 24-year-old defeated fellow Dutchman Jimmy van Schie 4-3 in the final to clinch the Series 8 title and scoop the £25,000 top prize.

The latest Champions Week saw the 12 weekly winners from the series battle it out over five days, with only six spots up for grabs in Saturday’s grand final.

Connor Scutt had made a strong start to the week, topping Group A to secure the first spot in finals night, and he picked up where he left off in the finale with group wins against van Schie and Tom Sykes to advance to the semi-finals.

Steve West saw off van Velzen and Derek Coulson to come through as the other group winner, with van Schie and van Velzen joining them in the last four as group runners-up.

In the semi-finals, van Velzen defeated Scutt 4-2 and van Schie edged past West 4-3, the latter checking out an incredible 151 to help him come back from 3-1 down.

There was nothing to separate the two Dutchmen in the final as it went all the way to a deciding leg, and van Velzen pinned double 10 to come out on top.

GREAVES DOUBLES UP IN WDF EVENTS

Beau Greaves continued her dominance of the women’s game by winning the Welsh Open and Welsh Classic titles at the weekend.

The 20-year-old defeated Rhian O’Sullivan in two closely-fought finals, with a 5-3 victory in the Classic decider followed by a 5-4 triumph in the Open final.

In the men’s events, Scotland’s Andy Davidson claimed his first WDF ranking title after beating Matthew Edgar 5-1 in the Welsh Open final.

Cliff Prior also got off the mark with a 5-1 win over Carl Wilkinson to pick up his maiden WDF title in the Welsh Classic.

Greaves remains well clear at the top of the WDF women’s rankings with 2,237 points, with Aileen de Graaf (1,757), O’Sullivan (1,188) and Lisa Ashton her closest challengers.

The battle to be WDF men’s number one is a closer race with Wesley Plaisier (902) less than 100 points clear of Australasian duo Ben Robb (807) and Danny Porter (807).
