What is a dart made up of?

A dart is made up of four different parts: the barrel, the flight, the shaft and the point. The barrel is the most important part of the dart as it’s the area that players will hold, whilst the flight is what helps your dart fly through the air. The shaft is what keeps the flight in place during play, whilst the point is what will enter the dartboard and helps to keep your dart in the board.

Our ‘The Anatomy Of A Dart’ blog has an in-depth look at the individual components on how each part impacts your performance. Read our ‘How To Choose Darts For Beginners’ blog for a whole guide on picking a beginner dart set.

Recommended Dart Weight for Beginners

We would recommend the best dart weight for beginners in 26-28g for steel tip and in 22g for soft tip. This is the ideal weight range for beginners to throw darts with, but there are a few factors to consider when choosing the weight of your darts.

A heavier dart, such as 28g in steel tip, works well for beginners as it is easier to find greater consistency more quickly. A lighter dart can be more difficult to control in the air and will more often take longer to master in practice. If you find after some time practicing that you are struggling to throw the darts high enough for the treble 20 then consider throwing with a lighter dart. Female and youth players often start with a lighter dart as these are more comfortable to throw with for a long period of time.

You’ll be able to find our recommended dart weights in this collection. For more information on the different dart weights and how to decide the right weight for you, take a look at our ‘Best Weights For Darts Beginners’ blog.

The Perfect First Darts

Our recommended best darts for beginners include the Darts Corner Warfare M6 Black Ring Steel Tip Darts. These darts are made of 80% tungsten and are priced to cater for all budgets. A tungsten dart is preferred to a brass dart as it’s made of more premium materials and will last longer. The Warfare M6 darts also come with a second set of flights and shafts, so you won’t have to make any extra purchases straight away for spare flights and stems. This set is also a good option if you want a lighter dart as it is also available in 24g and 26g.

The Designa Meteors 90 V2 Steel Tip Darts are a popular choice for beginners looking to choose a dart in a heavier weight. These darts are made of quality 90% tungsten and come in 30g, 32g or 36g, which is at the high end of the weight scale. The Meteors 90 V2 darts also have a distinctive knurled grip to offer players some grip on the barrels.

Darts Accessories for Beginners

This collection also includes plenty of darts accessories that would benefit a beginner. Choose one of the darts cases on this page to keep your darts safe and secure and to make it easy carrying them around with you.

Pick up some extra flights and shafts so that you’ve always got a spare set ready to use if you need them. You’ll get some spare flights and stems in one of our accessory kits which also feature on this page. These kits are great for players who are just getting started in darts as they come with lots of different accessories to try out
