Ryan Searle

Ryan Searle is not just known for using heavy darts but his prowess on the dartboard too! Nicknamed ‘Heavy Metal’, Searle showed he belongs at the elite level with a run to the final of the 2021 Players Championship Finals. In the Minehead decider, Searle was edged out 11-10 by Peter Wright as he finished just one leg short of becoming a major darts champion.

The fast-throwing Searle won his first ProTour title with a Players Championship victory in 2020, and he has since won another floor event in each of the next three seasons. In the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts, Searle threw his first nine-dart finish on the television, with his perfect leg also the leg that won him the match. Ryan Searle Darts by Harrows

Ryan Searle uses his signature Harrows Ryan Searle Steel Tip Darts in a 32g weight. His darts set comes with Red Carbon ST stems and ‘Heavy Metal’ flights, so you are ready to play straight away. These are the darts Searle uses in matches on the PDC tour, with the barrels made of 90% tungsten, meaning they have a high tungsten content and will last a long time.

Searle’s darts come in different weights from 22g to 32g. This means players who have a different preference for their dart weight can choose the dart that suits them the best.

What has Ryan Searle won?

Ryan Searle’s haul of senior titles in the PDC rose to four at the end of the 2023 ProTour season. ‘Heavy Metal’ beat Michael van Gerwen 8-6 in the final of Players Championship 3 to pick up his maiden tournament win during the 2020 season. Searle doubled his tally by winning another Players Championship title in the summer of 2021.

Searle’s third title came at Players Championship 13 in the early months of the 2022 season, whilst his fourth victory followed at the very start of the 2023 ProTour when he won Players Championship 1. His best run in a PDC major event came at the 2021 Players Championship Finals when he reached the final in Minehead.

Is Ryan Searle blind?

Ryan Searle is not blind but suffers from astigmatism which is an eye condition that causes blurred version. Searle will sometimes have to ask the referee where the darts have landed, but despite this he has still gone on to have a great career at the professional level.

On his eye condition, Searle said: “I’ve had it since I was little. If my left eye was as bad as my right, I would have been officially non-sighted. I have to put on glasses in the car. Those glasses give me just enough sight to drive, so you don’t want to get in the car with me!”

Why does Ryan Searle use heavier darts?

The Ryan Searle dart weight is unique in the professional game with ‘Heavy Metal’ opting for a 32g dart. Most pro players in the PDC will use a weight ranging between 20-24g, so Searle uses by far the heaviest set of darts on the tour.

Speaking to the Metro in 2021, Searle said: “I think the average is about 23g, but I just like throwing a heavier dart. Part of it is I like being a bit different, I’ve got long hair, not many other people have, no one else has got heavy darts so I just thought I should use them.”

The ‘Heavy Metal’ nickname comes from Searle’s weight of darts, as well as his musical taste. The man based in Holcombe Rogus, in Devon, also listens to the heavy metal genre of music.

Career Highlights

In February 2020, Ryan Searle joined the roll of honour of PDC ProTour winners when he claimed the Players Championship 3 title. ‘Heavy Metal’ defeated Michael van Gerwen in the final to clinch the £10,000 top prize and his maiden senior title on the professional circuit. His victory against van Gerwen would also help him to qualify for the World Grand Prix for the first time later that year.

In late 2021, Ryan Searle achieved another milestone in his career by reaching his first major televised final. The Englishman got to the decider of the Players Championship Finals in Minehead, after recording wins over Simon Whitlock, Ryan Joyce, Rob Cross, Daryl Gurney and Brendan Dolan. In the final, Searle was beaten 11-10 in legs by Peter Wright to just miss out on the title.

Ryan Searle showcased his talents at the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts with a perfect nine-dart leg. During the group stages of the tournament in Wolverhampton, Searle threw a nine-dart finish in his match against Northern Ireland’s Nathan Rafferty. It was a first nine darter on television for ‘Heavy Metal’ and the leg also won him the match!
