Michael Smith Darts

Michael Smith has been competing on the PDC circuit since 2008. The St Helens ace outlined his potential as a future star when he won the 2013 PDC World Youth Championship, before suffering heartache losing in his first eight major finals.

‘Bully Boy’ clinched his maiden major title in the PDC after winning the Grand Slam of Darts in November 2022, and two months later threw the perfect nine dart leg to overcome Michael van Gerwen in the final of the PDC World Championship. His landmark success at Alexandra Palace helped propel Smith to the top of the world rankings. Michael Smith’s current darts equipment

The darts Michael Smith currently uses are his signature Shot Michael Smith Achieve 24g Darts. In July 2023, Smith signed with the darts manufacturer Shot following a long and successful partnership with Unicorn.

On signing for Shot, Smith said: “I am over the moon to have signed with Shot Darts. From our very first meeting everything felt like a perfect fit. The standard of all the equipment produced by them has really impressed me and I cannot wait to see what is released going forward. The aim now is to try and win more PDC majors and form a very successful partnership.”

Smith’s Shot darts have been designed specifically for the 2023 PDC world champion and are the set he trusts to help him stay on top of his game. This Michael Smith 24g darts are made of 90% tungsten with a centre weighted barrel, which is his personal preference.

Signature Bully Boy Designs

The Michael Smith darts player range features a variety of different sets in both steel and soft tip to suit every level of player from beginner to professional. The Shot Michael Smith Precision Soft Tip Dart is the ideal choice for newcomers as it is available in 18g – our suggested dart weight for beginners in soft tip – and its 80% tungsten barrel provides a dependable grip so you can feel in control when the dart is in your hand.

The Shot Michael Smith Tenacious Steel Tip Dart is the perfect choice for more experienced steel tip players, and in particular for those who prefer a front weighted barrel. This 90% tungsten dart has been crafted to have its weight positioned at the front of the barrel (near the point), so if you are a player who likes a dart more weighted at the front then this could be the dart for you.

Michael Smith Darts Accessories

The Michael Smith range features plenty of darts accessories to elevate your game, including the Shot Michael Smith Professional Level Dartboard made from high quality sisal, and the Shot Michael Smith Professional Surround which will protect your walls from any stray darts and features the ‘Bully Boy’ logo on either side along with the Shot branding.

The Shot Michael Smith Accessory Kit is also a popular option for players, as with the ultimate 84-piece accessory pack you can customise your darts and try out different equipment to improve your game. If you are a darts enthusiast then the Shot Michael Smith Dart Shirt would be an excellent addition to your collection and is made from lightweight material to provide an ultra-comfortable feel whilst you play darts.

Michael Smith’s 9 dart finishes

The Michael Smith 9 dart leg during the 2023 PDC World Championship final is widely regarded as “The Greatest Leg Of Darts Ever.”

In the third leg of the second set, both Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith started the leg with six perfect darts. Van Gerwen threw a 180 and a 177 to leave 144, whilst Smith produced two scores of 180 to leave 141. ‘MVG’ then missed double 12 to complete the nine-dart leg and Smith stepped up to check out 141 and finish the leg in the perfect nine darts.

After losing in his first eight major darts finals, Michael Smith achieved his darting destiny by winning the 2022 Grand Slam of Darts. The St Helens star ended his long wait for a maiden big title in the PDC by beating Nathan Aspinall in the final.

Just two months after becoming a major champion for the first time, Michael Smith doubled his tally with a victory against Michael van Gerwen to win the 2023 PDC World Championship final. A back and forth contest featured the ‘Bully Boy’ throwing an incredible nine-dart finish on his way to winning the biggest tournament in world darts.

How old is Michael Smith?

Born on September 18, 1990, Michael Smith celebrates his 33rd birthday in 2023 as the reigning PDC world champion and PDC world number one.

Smith has been playing darts on the professional circuit since as far back as 2008, whilst still a teenager, and has been on the PDC tour ever since, winning many titles all around the world. Before becoming a major champion, ‘Bully Boy’ had already racked up close to 20 senior titles in the PDC, including the 2018 Shanghai Darts Masters and 2022 US Darts Masters.

Why is Michael Smith called Bully Boy?

Michael Smith is called ‘Bully Boy’ from his previous work on a cattle farm in Littleborough. Smith would help out by tagging the new-born calves and the nickname ‘Bully Boy’ came from the farm owner.

Smith said: “When the cows gave birth, the farm owner – who used to be a bouncer at my auntie’s pub – got me to help with tagging the new-born calves. For 35 minutes, I got slammed in cowpats and cow’s muck. They didn’t always like it and I had one on its back, my fingers in its nose, legs in the air. He called me a bully, and that’s how the nickname stuck.”
