How old is Dirk van Duijvenbode?

Born on June 30, 1992, Dirk van Duijvenbode celebrated his 31st birthday in 2023 – a year which saw him win three Players Championship titles on the PDC circuit. The trio of titles doubled his career title tally in the professional ranks, having opened his account with a Players Championship victory in 2021 and then a pair of triumphs on the floor during the following year.  Van Duijvenbode also broke new ground on the European Tour in 2023, reaching two finals in the European Darts Open and European Darts Matchplay, losing in a last-leg decider on both occasions to Gerwyn Price and Luke Humphries.

Why does Dirk van Duijvenbode have an aubergine?

Dirk van Duijvenbode has a picture of an aubergine on his shirt to show off his love of aubergines. The Dutchman works part-time at the Van Onselen eggplant farm, based in 's-Gravenzande, in the Netherlands. He has been working at the farm since he was 15-years-old and during his run to the 2020 World Grand Prix final he was called the ‘Aubergenius’, a nickname which has since stuck.

When did Dirk van Duijvenbode start playing darts?

Dirk van Duijvenbode started playing darts in his teenage years, around the age of 14 or 15, and was one of many players to take inspiration from Dutch darts icon Raymond van Barneveld. ‘Barney’ won five World Championships and helped create a darts boom in the Netherlands, with van Duijvenbode one of several Dutch players to follow in his path by reaching the professional ranks and regularly competing in major competitions. Van Duijvenbode competed in the first year of the PDC Youth Tour (now known as the Development Tour) in 2011 and reached a final in the last event of the season.

Dirk van Duijvenbode Career Highlights

Dirk van Duijvenbode’s energetic walk-on has become popular with darts fans. He walks out to ‘Just Like You’ by Radical Redemption, which is a Dutch hardcore style song, and in the 2020 Belgian Darts Championship he entertained the crowd when he got up on stage.

A breakthrough moment in the career of Dirk van Duijvenbode came during lockdown at the 2020 World Grand Prix. Van Duijvenbode made his debut in the double-start tournament and went all the way to the final, beating a quartet of former major champions in Mensur Suljovic, Dimitri Van den Bergh, Gary Anderson and Simon Whitlock on the way. He lost out 5-2 to Gerwyn Price in the final but his performances that week in Coventry outlined his potential as one to watch.

During the 2021 PDC World Darts Championship, Dirk van Duijvenbode showed off his love for aubergines by bringing one onto the stage with him! The ‘Aubergenius’ carried the eggplant with him for his first-round match against Bradley Brooks, which he won 3-2. Van Duijvenbode would go on to reach the quarter-finals that year, beating former world champions Rob Cross and Glen Durrant, before losing out to Gary Anderson in the last eight.
