A Week In Darts – September 25, 2023 – Chisnall Denies Nine-Dart Humphries In Budapest

The PDC European Tour made its annual stop in Hungary at the weekend with the latest staging of the Hungarian Darts Trophy. A memorable finale saw a nine-dart finish and a 170 checkout as the last match went all the way to a last-leg decider. Here’s our look back at another exciting week in the world of darts…

CHISNALL DENIES NINE-DART HUMPHRIES

Dave Chisnall defied a nine-dart leg and a 170 checkout from Luke Humphries to win the Hungarian Darts Trophy on Sunday night.

‘Chizzy’, who had already beaten Humphries in European Tour finals at the Baltic Sea Darts Open and Dutch Darts Championship earlier this year, completed the hat-trick with a thrilling 8-7 victory in Budapest.

Humphries looked set to triumph at the MVM Dome after throwing his first nine-dart leg on a PDC stage to move 7-5 up, but Chisnall won the last three legs to pocket the £30,000 top prize.

“I would love to play Luke in every final! He is a phenomenal dart player,” said Chisnall, who has now won six European Tour titles in five different countries.

“I’m so happy to win the tournament, but full credit to Luke. He’s been playing with an injury all day.

“I threw everything at him and he just kept fighting back. I couldn’t get rid of him! It was a fantastic final.”

Top seed Chisnall began the final day of action in Budapest with a 6-1 win over Rowby-John Rodriguez, before holding off the challenge of Michael van Gerwen 6-4 in the quarter-finals.

‘Chizzy’ held off a fight back from Scott Williams to prevail 7-5 and set up a final with Humphries, who had battled through a back injury to reach his 10th European Tour final following victories against Martin Schindler, Luke Woodhouse and Gerwyn Price on Sunday.

FIELD FOR GRAND PRIX IS CONFIRMED

The 32-player line-up for the PDC World Grand Prix next week has been confirmed with three players set to make their debuts in the double-start tournament.

The Hungarian Darts Trophy marked the final event before the cut off with Germany’s Ricardo Pietreczko and Dutch prospect Gian van Veen both occupying the last provisional ProTour spot during the weekend.

But it was Luke Woodhouse who booked his debut in Leicester next week as the 16th and final ProTour qualifier with a career-best run to a first European Tour quarter-final in Budapest. Josh Rock and Mike De Decker will be joining him as the other two debutants in the field.

Michael van Gerwen is the defending champion after winning a sixth World Grand Prix title last year, and enters as the second seed, with reigning PDC world champion Michael Smith the top seed.

The draw for the World Grand Prix will be made today (Monday, September 25) on BoyleSports’ social media channels.

AROUND THE BOARD

Darts made its way into the North London Derby on Sunday with Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka showing off his darts throw after scoring against their arch rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Saka was mimicking Spurs player James Maddison’s own arrows celebration from earlier in the season. When asked after the match about his England team-mate copying his celebration, Maddison told SPURSPLAY: “Me and Bukayo had a bit of banter and a bit of trash talking on international duty.

“And I got told he did the darts celebration – he must have still been doing it when I turned him for the first goal I think, so I’ll have a little word with him in there!”

Ever used a plastic bag for a darts case? Well, that’s exactly what Danish PDC tour card holder Vladimir Andersen did at the weekend!
